Shahnnen Elizabeth-Head: The Innovative Winemaker at Estelbrook Farms & Vineyard
Nestled within the dynamic landscapes of the Columbia Gorge AVA, Shannon Elizabeth-Head is carving out her unique space in the winemaking world. As the winemaker at Estelbrook Farms & Vineyard, Shahnnen’s approach blends a deep respect for tradition with an adventurous spirit of experimentation. Her wines, like the land she tends, are a testament to the diverse and magical essence of the Gorge.
The Columbia Gorge: A Land of Endless Possibility
For Shahnnen, the Columbia Gorge AVA is unlike any other. “The wide breadth of diversity—of everything,” she says with enthusiasm. “You can’t believe everything that’s here. The Gorge is it, y’all.” This diversity—from its climate to its geography—provides an unmatched canvas for winemakers to craft distinctive wines.
The region’s varied microclimates, shaped by drastic changes in elevation and rainfall, offer endless opportunities for innovation. Shahnnen’s ’s vineyard reflects this diversity, with 10 cool-climate varieties planted across 10.5 acres. Each vintage is a new adventure, driven by the conditions of the year. “Winemaking follows the farming, so it’s not always the same styles or blends each year,” she explains.
A Commitment to Regenerative Practices
At Estelbrook Farms & Vineyard, Shahnnen is dedicated to sustainable and regenerative farming. “We believe we’re farming the soil,” she explains. “Creating the best possible environment for plants to thrive makes the best wine.” The vineyard has earned Organic (CCOF), Demeter Biodynamic, and Regenerative Organic (ROC) certifications—making it one of only eight vineyards in the world to achieve all three. A key element of their approach is the application of hundreds of tons of compost annually, which nourishes the land and supports its long-term vitality. This commitment to sustainability underpins every bottle produced at Estelbrook.
A Dynamic Range of Varieties and Styles
At Estelbrook Farms, Shahnnen’s flagship wine is Chardonnay, which she describes as having “a Chablis-like bent” when crafted as a still wine. But her creativity doesn’t stop there. She’s also exploring sparkling wine, producing a Crémant-style 100% Chardonnay.
In addition to the classics like Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris, Shahnnen’s vineyard includes unique selections from Jura, Alsace, and the Dolomites, such as Savagnin, a special clone of Gewürztraminer, and Teroldego. “We made our first red this year,” she shares, “a blend of Pinot Meunier, Pinot Noir, and Blaufränkisch, made into a nouveau-style wine.”
This eclectic mix showcases her willingness to push boundaries while honoring the land’s potential.
Breaking Barriers as a Woman Winemaker
Shahnnen’s journey as a woman in the winemaking world has been shaped by resilience and community. “I am so lucky to have kind and generous friends and mentors—most of them women, unsurprisingly—so my (limited) experience has been great, but I know that’s not typical,” she says. Her background—from growing up in the wilderness in Montana to a career in tech—has given her the toughness and adaptability needed to thrive.
When asked about the advantages of being a woman winemaker, Shahnnen points to her open-mindedness. “I am not interested in flexing any weird ego trips, so I am willing to take chances, use my senses, and make mistakes (so many mistakes!),” she laughs. This willingness to experiment and learn has fueled her innovative approach to winemaking.
Exploring New Frontiers in Winemaking
Shahnnen’s excitement for the craft shines through in her exploration of unconventional techniques. “I’m most excited about fermenting in vessels other than wood, soleras, co-ferments of wine grapes with other fruits, and low and no ABV wines,” she says. These methods not only expand the possibilities of flavor but also reflect her commitment to sustainability and creativity.
The Future of the Columbia Gorge AVA
Looking ahead, Shahnnen sees a bright future for the region. “A little warmer, a little drier, and more well-known. You can’t hide this amount of magic for long,” she predicts. While climate change poses challenges, it also encourages winemakers like Shahnnen to adapt and innovate.
She hopes visitors to the Columbia Gorge will embrace its diversity.
“You can get high-quality wines that span the gamut of the entire continent of Europe in just the 40-mile span of the Gorge. It’s incredible,” she marvels.
This variety, combined with the dedication of its winemakers, ensures the Columbia Gorge AVA’s reputation as a premier wine destination.
