“When I consider the Columbia Gorge as a wine growing region, the thing that inspires me most is how dynamic and energy-rich the landscape is,” Bethany explains. “Water and air energy define the region with the windy Columbia River cutting across its center, but the northern and southern boundaries both have the volcanic fire energy of Mount Hood and Mount Adams. Finally, earth comes into play with the potent juxtaposition of sedimentary soils on the valley floor and volcanic soils above the Missoula Flood line. It is a unique place where fire, water, air, and earth all meet.”

Bethany’s artistic vision is apparent in her work, particularly in her use of carbonic maceration. “I’m continually fine-tuning my approach to carbonic maceration,” she explains. “This is a technique that in modern times is being applied widely to many different grape varieties but historically has been most closely associated with Gamay. It’s a challenging technique but one that produces super unique and exciting aromas and flavors.”

Time will only tell what it will look like as creative individuals flock here to grow,” she reflects.

This is not a place where every grower will produce the same grape variety or the same style, but there is consistency in the desire to make sustainably farmed wines of place. The quality-oriented mindset is revealed in the glass,” she emphasizes.
