Matt Ash’s love affair with wine began with an “Ah-Ha” bottle of Syrah during his college days on the Central Coast of California. That single sip ignited a passion that would shape his career and life. From those early moments of discovery, Matt’s path led him through various roles in the beverage industry, including leadership positions in the coffee sector and at Trader Joe’s. However, it was his move to Oregon that truly set the stage for his deep dive into the world of wine.
Building Expertise in Oregon’s Vineyards
Upon arriving in Oregon, Matt took on the role of Training & Development Coordinator at Willamette Valley Vineyards. It was here that he met his wife, Katherine, and further cemented his love for wine and its culture. In 2019, the couple moved to the Columbia Gorge, where Matt’s hands-on experience expanded dramatically. Working in the cellar, vineyard, and tasting room at Syncline Winery, he gained invaluable insights that even the most detailed wine books couldn’t provide.
Educating and Inspiring the Wine Community
Today, Matt’s influence in the wine world extends far beyond the cellar. As the previous Chair of Education for the Columbia Gorge Winegrowers Association, he played a pivotal role in spreading knowledge and appreciation for wine. His expertise also enriched the dining experience at Riverside Restaurant, where he served as Wine Director. Now, as the Direct to Consumer Lead for Hawkins Cellars, Matt continues to share his passion for wine with others, making it accessible and enjoyable for all.
A Life Beyond the Vineyard
When he’s not immersed in the world of wine, Matt enjoys hiking with his wife and their dogs, exploring the natural beauty of the Columbia Gorge. He’s also an avid baker, crafting delicious sourdough bread, and constantly seeking out new wine regions to learn from and explore.
