A New Chapter for Tarwater Tavern: Meet Owner Kris Goodwillie
There’s a fresh spark lighting up White Salmon’s nightlife, and it’s coming from a familiar corner in town. Earlier this year, Kris Goodwillie stepped in as the new owner of Tarwater Tavern— right in the heart of downtown White Salmon— and it’s bringing new energy, while keeping the heart of this beloved hangout intact.
We sat down with Kris to hear what inspired the leap, and where Tarwater is headed next.

Why Tarwater?
For Kris, Tarwater was more than just a business opportunity.
“Tarwater already had that rare spark—a place that feels like both a hideout and a homecoming,” she says. Nestled in the heart of White Salmon, with the Columbia River and the Gorge community at its core, Tarwater offered a foundation worth building on.
A Vision for Today—and Tomorrow
Kris’s short-term vision is simple—keep Tarwater a beloved local spot where both regulars and newcomers feel at home. Looking ahead five years, she hopes the tavern will be known as a true reflection of the Gorge itself—rooted, welcoming, and just a little wild.
Community at the Core
White Salmon thrives on connection, and Kris sees Tarwater as a natural extension of that spirit. “From river guides to winemakers, climbers to families, this community is built on showing up for one another. Our role is to be the gathering place—a local living room where everyone feels welcome and conversations flow as easily as the drinks.”
That community vibe is already alive and well with events like weekly Patio Pours featuring local winemakers, with brewers set to join in this winter. Add in music, comedy, karaoke, and now Trivia Tuesdays, and you’ve got something for everyone.
A Local Twist on Food & Drinks
While Tarwater keeps its laid-back approach—welcoming guests to bring food from nearby restaurants—it’s also keeping drinks fresh with rotating specials and seasonal taps. A personal favorite for Kris? The classic Rainier, which recently found its way onto the menu.
And for football fans, there’s more—early openings on Sundays with breakfast burritos from Maria’s Mountain Grub, until they sell out.
The Team Behind the Bar
A smooth transition was key, and longtime bartenders Jenny and Jess have stayed on, joined by new team members Anna and Allie. The mix of familiar faces and fresh energy has made the shift seamless.
Behind the Scenes
Like any tavern takeover, there have been surprises—quirky building fixes, lively debates with regulars, and the occasional lesson in bar-game etiquette. But through it all, the goal has stayed the same—to create a space that feels comfortable and genuine.
Looking Ahead
As summer and fall unfold, Kris is excited to invite both locals and visitors to experience the “new” Tarwater. From football Sundays to Patio Pours and a growing lineup of community-centered events, the tavern is poised to be a dependable favorite in White Salmon’s nightlife.
Her hope is that every guest leaves saying they felt welcomed and can’t wait to come back!
