Exploring the Passion of Bethany Kimmel: Winemaker and Visionary of Color Collector in the Columbia Gorge AVA
The Columbia Gorge AVA is a region that encapsulates the beauty of nature’s contrasts—where dynamic landscapes converge with a pioneering spirit. Few individuals embody this spirit quite like Bethany Kimmel, the owner and winemaker of Color Collector. Bethany is not only redefining what it means to create wines in this vibrant region, but she’s also showcasing the potential of the Columbia Gorge AVA to become a haven for exploration, innovation, and quality.
A Landscape of Energy and Inspiration
“When I consider the Columbia Gorge as a wine growing region, the thing that inspires me most is how dynamic and energy-rich the landscape is,” Bethany explains. “Water and air energy define the region with the windy Columbia River cutting across its center, but the northern and southern boundaries both have the volcanic fire energy of Mount Hood and Mount Adams. Finally, earth comes into play with the potent juxtaposition of sedimentary soils on the valley floor and volcanic soils above the Missoula Flood line. It is a unique place where fire, water, air, and earth all meet.”
This poetic appreciation for the region’s natural elements is evident in every bottle she produces. Bethany’s approach to winemaking is deeply rooted in her connection to the land, which she sees as a harmonious interplay of these elemental forces.
A Singular Focus on Gamay
Color Collector is a small-scale operation with a singular focus: Gamay. “As a small producer, I focus on only one variety of winegrape in order to explore all its potential expressions and truly fine-tune my craft,” Bethany shares. This dedication has allowed her to experiment and master the nuances of Gamay, a varietal that thrives in the Gorge’s diverse terroir. From vineyard to bottle, her wines reflect an intimate understanding of the grape’s character and potential.
In recent years, Bethany has expanded her repertoire to include Gamay-based vermouth. This innovation is not only a testament to her creativity but also her adaptability to the challenges posed by climate change and difficult vintages. “Making vermouth has been a way to become more nimble and responsive to changing climate conditions and problematic vintages,” she notes.
The Art and Strength of Winemaking
As a woman winemaker in the Gorge, Bethany feels empowered by her community. “It’s great! I’m grateful to be in a community where I feel supported and valued,” she says. However, she’s quick to note that winemaking itself transcends gender. “Winemaking requires both physical strength and deeply attuned sensory awareness. It can be dirty, wet, cold, and analytical, but ultimately the beauty is based in sensory perception. The maker—whether male or female—brings their own personal experience and artistic aesthetic to the process.”
Bethany’s artistic vision is apparent in her work, particularly in her use of carbonic maceration. “I’m continually fine-tuning my approach to carbonic maceration,” she explains. “This is a technique that in modern times is being applied widely to many different grape varieties but historically has been most closely associated with Gamay. It’s a challenging technique but one that produces super unique and exciting aromas and flavors.”
The Future of the Columbia Gorge AVA
Looking ahead, Bethany envisions the Columbia Gorge AVA continuing to attract creative individuals who will shape its identity as a hub for adventurous winemaking. “The Gorge has always been a place for adventurers and explorers. Time will only tell what it will look like as creative individuals flock here to grow,” she reflects.
As the region evolves, Bethany is confident that its wines will continue to stand out for their integrity. “People should expect wines with integrity. This is not a place where every grower will produce the same grape variety or the same style, but there is consistency in the desire to make sustainably farmed wines of place. The quality-oriented mindset is revealed in the glass,” she emphasizes.
