Where to Ski

Timberline Lodge & Ski Area

Timberline is pure Oregon magic — a National Historic Landmark built in the 1930s, wrapped in hand-carved wood beams and stone fireplaces. In winter, its lifts whisk you into a world of sweeping snowfields and quiet forests. It’s perfect for intermediate skiers and families, and the cozy lodge offers après-ski charm with local brews, hot drinks, and sweeping views of the Cascade Range.

*Be sure to snag a Spring Ski pass, which go on sale in February! Timberline is also the only lift-accessed summer snow experiences of its kind in North America!

Mt. Hood Meadows

A favorite among Gorge locals, Mt. Hood Meadows has over 2,000 acres of skiable terrain and some of the most reliable snow on the mountain. Wide-open groomers, tree runs, and dramatic bowls make it a must for all skill levels. On a clear day, you’ll see Mount Jefferson and the Sisters shining in the distance — and when the sun sets, the lights come on for unforgettable night skiing.

Mt. Hood Skibowl

If you like steeper terrain, moguls, and a bit of nightlife, Skibowl delivers. It’s the largest night-skiing area in the U.S. and a local favorite for tubing and snow play. Government Camp, the cozy alpine village at its base, buzzes with winter energy — grab a drink or a pizza at the Ratskeller before heading back to White Salmon for a quiet night by the fire.

Mt. Hood Meadows Nordic Center

Love to Nordic ski? The “locals” White Salmon parking lot is a mere 36 miles from downtown (and the entrance to the Nordic Center). Here they offer rentals, lessons and guided snowshoe tours, where 15 kilometers of beautifully groomed trails wind through peaceful forests, open meadows and the breathtaking Sahalie Falls.

When to Go

Mount Hood’s ski season typically runs from November through May, though the snow is at its best from December through March. Bring chains or traction tires — mountain weather can change quickly — and always check conditions before you head up.

Getting There from White Salmon

From downtown White Salmon, take the Hood River Bridge across the Columbia, then follow Highway 35 south through the orchards and foothills. In 36 miles, you’ll be stepping out into fresh snow with Mount Hood rising above you. It’s one of the easiest winter escapes in the Pacific Northwest — no flights, no fuss, just beautiful Gorge views all the way up.

Après-Ski & Winter Fun

After a day on the slopes, warm up with a craft beer or glass of Columbia Gorge wine back in White Salmon. Cozy spots like Everybody’s Brewing, Pixán Taqueria, or Wildcraft Kitchen make the perfect ending to a day in the snow. Prefer to stay overnight? Choose from boutique lodging and vacation rentals with mountain views, just minutes from the river.

And if you’re not skiing, there’s still plenty of winter magic — snowshoeing, scenic hikes, and quiet moments along the Gorge’s frosty waterfalls.
