Welcome Dylan and Kristen to White Salmon!

dylan_martinez_glassIn October of 2017 the White Salmon Glassworks studio was re-opened by Dylan Martinez and his wife, Kristen. The couple originally come from Minnesota but have traveled and moved quite a bit over the last 9 years. In May of 2017 Dylan graduated with is Masters in Glass from Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. Following graduation, they began looking for the next place to call home. They both wanted to live near the mountains and greenery and dreamed of a quaint small town with a nice community of people, outdoor adventure and good food. When they stumbled upon Hood River in September of 2017, they knew the Gorge was it! They loved it immediately and couldn’t believe their luck when they discovered the empty glass studio in White Salmon. It had everything they wanted and needed, so they flew home to Minnesota, packed up their things, and moved out to the Gorge 1 week later.

Since they’ve settled in last Fall, they have loved the Gorge as much as they thought they would and have really grown into the glass studio. In the past year Dylan has grown his glass representation from two large galleries to nine major galleries both nationally and internationally as well as winning a 40-day residency in Murano, Italy to blow glass. He’s most well-known for his realistic Water Bag Sculptures, which can be seen in the window display at the glass studio. When Dylan and his assistant, Jess, aren’t in the hot shop blowing glass, they’re often downstairs working in the cold studio grinding, polishing and assembling other projects.

Dylan and Kristen are very excited to open the studio to the community this holiday season with the well-known “Blow Your Own Ornament” program. With moving in so quickly last season, the couple were not able to run the program, but definitely heard the requests from the community. “We’re grateful for the support we’ve had over the last year, the community in White Salmon has been very welcoming. We’re happy we can continue on this tradition this year and give the community an opportunity to come in and enjoy the magic of hot glass,” Kristen said.
